Risks and Complications

Cataract surgery is performed millions of times a year now and has become a very safe operation. In spite of everything, it is a complicated microsurgical procedure in the eye and no operation is risk-free. It is therefore important that we discuss the risks and benefits of the operation with you. The following are complications and how often they occur. techiescity

Infection risk: occurs in less than 1 out of 1000 cases, even if meticulous attention is paid to sterile work. In extremely rare cases, the infection can be very severe and result in follow-up operations and hospitalization. Loss of vision can occur in very rare cases despite immediate treatment. techiescity

Retinal detachment: occurs in less than 0.1% of cases. If retinal detachment occurs, retinal surgery must be performed. themarketingpilot

Capsular rupture and anterior chamber lens: in rare cases, the lens capsule, a few thousandths of a millimeter thick, tears during the operation. technologywebdesign

In this case, cystoid macular edema (see below) can occur. Furthermore, the artificial lens is not inserted into the capsular bag, but directly in front of it. The risk of a capsule rupture is significantly increased in patients with a so-called PEX syndrome or PEX glaucoma. We talk to affected patients in detail about possible side effects before the operation. technologytimesnow

Secondary implantation: in rare cases (0.1-0.2%) it is not possible to insert an artificial lens at the first attempt. In this case, the eye is closed again and the artificial lens is inserted in a second procedure a few weeks later.

Cystoid macular edema: even after a problem-free operation, about 1% of all patients experience an accumulation of water under the central retina. This can affect vision for weeks to months and must be treated with eye drops (and sometimes with tablets). A permanent diminution of the view through this water accumulation is very rare.

Despite the above list, cataract surgery is a very safe operation. However, we are of the opinion that you, the patient, must be informed about such complications, even if they occur very rarely.
